The gap between us and AI

Welcome back to the logs! How's your day? This week I saw two videos, and I came up with a few ideas. Which are about the gap between me and you, and of course, the AI.

You can get anything you dream of, just nothing you want.

This phrase is from this video; I just froze when I heard it. Later, I saw another video and a part where they're talking about "the content writer who doesn't use AI." This is the spark that made me want to write this article. I don't write for a living but I'm a content writer who spends a decent amount of time on writing, and I'm also an AI engineer who uses AI and develops it day to day. I think I got the intersection that not many people have.

After gathering all the minds together, I think I found the one reason that I don't want to use AI for my content creation.

It just couldn't give me exactly what I want.

More specifically, it probably needs to spend more time to get what I truly want compared to just doing it on my own. This phrase just felt like a thing that I had been looking for while I didn't know where it was, and I suddenly found out.

Context is all over the place

We can get further from the previous point. Why couldn't AI generate the things that I want exactly? From my perspective, I think sometimes we just couldn't fully describe what we're thinking in our heads, maybe we don't even understand it. This problem not only appears with AI, but also with humans.

Just think about it. If your supervisor wanted you to ship a new feature, what would you expect? I bet you don't want to hear this kind of statement: "Build the things that our clients would like", and that's the most important thing — the context.

The context is all over the place, not only in communications, but also in everything that you interact with. The feeling, the texture, or the rhythm.

(right here right now I'm sitting under the trees writing this article, never mind lol, the environment just gives me this type of vibe)

The vague context is a red flag if you want anyone to work for you. Same thing for AI and humans. Like the statement you can see in every AI forums — "Garbage in, garbage out.". So we want to give as much context as we can, then we can get close to exactly what we want.

The next thing is — how to let someone who doesn't have your experience still comprehend it? I think this is the art of expressing.

In summary, I have to say this article focuses more on the content creation cases, which are high-level and harder to define, comprehend and describe than low-level logic. But for my AI engineering role, that's a whole different story. For those who don't know how the software works, in software engineering there is lot of logic combined with each other to make the functions work, and those logic is easier to define and design than an idea you come up with while you're showering.

Putting the article aside, I think we have this kind of problem because of the model capability. Maybe in the next 10 or 20 years — your thoughts that are in your mind might be extracted straight out from your head and be built up in a one-shot prompt — maybe not even a prompt but neuron tweaking instead lol. But for now, the best way to solve this problem is probably to improve your comprehension of everything, and then express it in the right way. That's the thing we'll get into in the next article.
